Tour Description

Discover the renowned sillar quarries in Arequipa on a comprehensive half-day tour (4 hours). The tour is available at two times, in the morning at 8:30 AM or in the afternoon at 2:00 PM, and will take you to the sillar quarries, a volcanic stone created by past eruptions. It starts at the Culebrillas ravine, where petroglyphs can still be appreciated, and continues visiting operational quarries that Arequipeños use today.

Detailed Itinerary

  • Two schedules are offered for the tour:
  • Mornings: Departure 08:30 AM, Return 12:30 PM.
  • Afternoons: Departure 2:00 PM, Return.
  • It begins with pick-up from your hotel in the historic center of Arequipa, where most tourist hotels are located.
  • In a spacious tourist minivan, you'll travel to the outskirts of the city to explore the sillar quarries. The first stop is the fascinating Culebrillas ravine, a quarry with narrow paths sculpted by water and wind erosion over thousands of years. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to see petroglyphs and beautiful stone sculptures.
  • Then, you'll visit other sillar quarries where blocks of sillar are still extracted. Here, you can observe the modern process of extraction and commercialization of these blocks.
  • After learning about the extraction and shaping process of sillar, you'll return to the historic center of Arequipa in the tourist transport. Here, you'll see the iconic colonial church of the Company of Jesus, which features impressive sillar sculptures.
  • The tour ends after four hours in the historic center of Arequipa.
